PLU: Challenge, Support and Success

Why is PLU the place to earn your degree in the U.S.?

PLU is internationally known for providing students with a challenging academic program, as well as personal interaction and research opportunities with world-renowned faculty. The university has approximately 3,400 students and 250 faculty members, allowing for an average class size of just 19 students. Along with placing consistently in the top 10 in the West by US News & World Report, PLU is recognized for its international focus on education. PLU students tie world issues, global research and diverse perspectives into the classroom. Regardless of your major, your participation and perspective is important to the PLU community. At this university, fellow students become both friends and collaborators; professors become both teachers and mentors.

As an accredited comprehensive university with 36 majors, PLU offers bachelors degrees through professional programs in the Schools of Business, Education and Nursing, as well as many majors in the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and the School of Physical Education. Accredited masters degrees are offered in business, education, nursing, family counseling and creative writing. PLU follows a 4-1-4 academic calendar with two four-month semesters (fall and spring) and a one-month January Term.

Enriching your academic experience at PLU, you will find the resources and support to pursue internships at local and internationally heralded Fortune 500 corporations-work with the technology of Microsoft, the forest products of Weyerhaeuser or the coffee of Starbucks-each with its international headquarters located near the PLU campus. After you have completed your degree, you can take part in the Practical Training Program to further enhance your experience. Students can work in the United States up to 12 months after graduation and apply to have an extension of up to six years (H Visa).

PLU is a special living and learning environment

Located in the northwest corner of the United States in the city of Tacoma, Washington, PLU enjoys a mild maritime climate and close proximity to the mountains, the Pacific Ocean, the city of Seattle, and Vancouver, Canada. Students might be found enjoying the arts and theatre in Tacoma or Seattle, hiking and skiing on Mt. Rainier, or viewing the ocean from the Washington coastline. PLU is just 45 minutes from the SeaTac International Airport, and one block from a bus depot.

PLU students enjoy state-of-the-art technology, a premier music facility, an open chemistry/physics lab and one of the largest astronomical telescopes in the region housed in the Keck Observatory. See these features of campus by visiting www.plu.edu/pluexper/tours/home.html.

The campus also has nine residence halls and international students are encouraged to live on campus. Rooms are double occupancy; you can request a single occupancy room if you apply early.
